In praise of the small phone

March 2, 2025

The new iPhone 16e kills "The Small Phone" for Apple. The vast majority of people want bigger screens. Pictures, video, social media, etc... it is all BETTER on the big screen. This is because the vast majority of people are addicted to their phones.

There are people nevertheless who do not want to use their phone for pictures, video, social media, etc... These people do not want a digital slot machine in their pocket. There is a movement of young people who want out of the social experiment and dystopian nightmare of digital addiction. There is an entire generation of promising devices cropping up like the Light Phone III, The Minimal Phone and more. This is a sign of hope. There is a market for these devices.

Apple always prided itself on thinking different. It was decidedly not an advertising company but rather a product company. It told us that our privacy matters. All of these things made Apple, Apple. What if Apple gave an option again for those who want to use their phone as a tool and not a consumption device? That is the promise of a small screen. You can consume/scroll on a small screen but you probably will not want to and that is the point. Calls, text messages, maps, podcasts, a flashlight, a timer, etc... these are all great tools that a modern smartphone brings that are not contingent on giant screens. If I want to watch a movie or watch a YouTube video, I'll use my tv. If I want to get work done I'll use my laptop. And here is the crucial point: these are all different things and I don't want my work or consumption on my smart phone.
